Türkçede “bu, şu, o” deriz. İngilizcede tek bir şey için iki kelime yeter: yakındaki için this (bu), uzaktaki için that (şu / o).
Tek bir şeyden bahsettiğimiz için ikisi de is ile kullanılır: This is my phone. That is a bird.
that is konuşurken genelde that's diye kısaltılır. this is ise yazıda kısaltılmaz.
Birini tanıştırırken de this kullanılır: This is my friend Ali.

Elinle tutabildiğin ya da yanındaki şey this, parmağınla gösterdiğin uzaktaki şey that.
Birden fazla şeyden bahsederken this ve that de çoğul olur: yakındakiler için these (bunlar), uzaktakiler için those (şunlar / onlar).
Çoğul oldukları için are ile kullanılırlar ve ardından gelen isim de çoğul olur: These are my books.
Okunuşa dikkat: this kısa “i” ile, these uzun “ii” ile okunur.
These are my books.

Those are our neighbours.
Şunlar bizim komşularımız.

Bunlar elma.
Türkçede “Bunlar elma” deriz ama İngilizcede isim de çoğul olur: These are apples.
“Bu ne?” = What is this?, “Şu ne?” = What is that? Çoğul için: What are these? (Bunlar ne?), What are those? (Şunlar ne?)
Cevapta this / that yerine it, these / those yerine they kullanılır: What is this? — It is a pen. What are these? — They are pens.
Evet / hayır soruları için is / are başa geçer: Is that your car? — Yes, it is. Are these your shoes? — No, they aren't.
What is this? — It is a pen.
Bu ne? — Bir kalem.
What are those? — They are birds.
Şunlar ne? — Kuşlar.
Is that your car? — Yes, it is.
Şu senin araban mı? — Evet.
Kısa cevapta “Yes, this is.” denmez; “Yes, it is.” denir.
Bu kelimeler isimden önce de gelir: this book (bu kitap), that car (şu araba), these shoes (bu ayakkabılar), those people (şu insanlar).
Türkçede “bu kitap” ve “bu kitaplar” deriz, “bu” hiç değişmez. İngilizcede ise isim çoğulsa this → these, that → those olur. “this books” yanlıştır.
Fiil de isme uyar: This book is new. These books are new.
This book is interesting.
Bu kitap ilginç.
Those shoes are expensive.
Şu ayakkabılar pahalı.
That man is my teacher.

Üç parça birbirine uymalı: these + books + are.
