Dolaylı sorular

Dolaylı soru, bir soruyu daha kibar sormanın yoludur. Soruyu Can you tell me…? / Could you tell me…? / Do you know…? gibi bir kalıbın içine koyarız: Where is the station? → Can you tell me where the station is?

Kural: kalıptan sonraki kısımda düz cümle sırası kullanılır: özne + fiil. Where is the station? → …where the station is. (…where is the station ✗)

Türkçede de soru başka bir cümlenin içine girince değişir: “İstasyon nerede?” → “İstasyonun nerede olduğunu söyler misiniz?” Türkçede ekler değişir, İngilizcede ise kelime sırası.

Diğer örnekler: What time is it? → Do you know what time it is? Who is that man? → Do you know who that man is?

• Can you tell me where the bank is?

  Bankanın nerede olduğunu söyleyebilir misiniz?

• Do you know what time it is?

  Saatin kaç olduğunu biliyor musunuz?

• Do you know how much this jacket is?

  Bu ceketin ne kadar olduğunu biliyor musun?

Doğrudan soruda do / does / did varsa, dolaylı soruda bu yardımcı fiil kaybolur ve fiil normal cümledeki haline döner: What time does the film start? → Do you know what time the film starts?

does gidince fiile -s eklenir: Where does she work? → …where she works. did gidince fiil geçmiş hale gelir: Where did he go? → …where he went.

Türklerin sık hatası: “Do you know where does she live?” ✗ → Do you know where she lives? ✓ Baştaki Do you know zaten soruyu taşır; ikinci bir do gerekmez.

• Do you know where she lives?

  Nerede yaşadığını biliyor musun?

• I didn't hear what he said.

  Ne dediğini duymadım.

• Could you tell me how this machine works?

  Bu makinenin nasıl çalıştığını söyler misiniz?

Soru kelimesi olmayan evet / hayır sorularında dolaylı soru if ya da whether ile kurulur. Türkçedeki “-ıp -madığını” karşılığıdır: Is the shop open? → Do you know if the shop is open? (Dükkânın açık olup olmadığını biliyor musun?)

Yine düz cümle sırası ve do / does / did yok: Does she speak English? → Do you know if she speaks English? Did they arrive? → Can you tell me if they arrived?

whether biraz daha resmidir ve or not ile kullanılabilir: I'm not sure whether he's coming or not.

Türklerin hatası if'i unutmak: “Do you know the shop is open?” — bu bir soru değil, bilgi verme olur (“Dükkânın açık olduğunu biliyor musun?”).

• Do you know if the museum is open?

  Müzenin açık olup olmadığını biliyor musun?

• Can you tell me if this bus goes to Kadıköy?

  Bu otobüsün Kadıköy'e gidip gitmediğini söyleyebilir misiniz?

• I don't know if he's at home.

  Evde olup olmadığını bilmiyorum.

Dolaylı soru sadece soru kalıplarıyla değil, cümle kalıplarıyla da kurulur: I wonder where she is. (Nerede olduğunu merak ediyorum.) I don't know what he wants. I'm not sure if it's open. I have no idea how it works.

Kalıp bir soruysa (Can you tell me…? Do you know…?) sonuna ? gelir; kalıp bir cümleyse (I wonder…, I don't know…) sonuna nokta gelir: I wonder what time it is.

Daha kibar kalıplar: Could you tell me…? / Would you mind telling me…? / Do you happen to know…? (Acaba … biliyor musunuz?) Kibarlık arttıkça cümle uzar.

Bu kalıplardan sonra da düz cümle sırası kullanılır: I wonder why she is sad. (why is she ✗)

• I wonder why he is so quiet today.

  Bugün neden bu kadar sessiz olduğunu merak ediyorum.

• I have no idea how much it costs.

  Ne kadar tuttuğu hakkında hiçbir fikrim yok.

• Do you happen to know where the post office is?

  Postanenin nerede olduğunu acaba biliyor musunuz?

Soru kelimesi (who, what, which) cümlenin öznesiyse doğrudan soruda da düz sıra vardır; dolaylı soruda hiçbir şey değişmez: Who called? → Do you know who called? What happened? → Can you tell me what happened?

Ama soru kelimesi nesneyse kural geçerli: Who did you call? → Can you tell me who you called?

Modal fiiller (can, should, will, could…) özneden sonraya geçer: Where can I buy tickets? → Do you know where I can buy tickets? What should we do? → I don't know what we should do.

Dolaylı soruda to + fiil de kullanılabilir: I don't know what to do. (Ne yapacağımı bilmiyorum.) Can you tell me how to get to the station?

• Do you know who made this cake?

  Bu pastayı kimin yaptığını biliyor musun?

• Can you tell me where I can buy a ticket?

  Nereden bilet alabileceğimi söyleyebilir misiniz?

• I don't know what to do.

  Ne yapacağımı bilmiyorum.

Evet / hayır sorusu → if / whether. Soru kalıbı → ?, cümle kalıbı (I wonder, I don't know) → .

  Tuvaletlerin nerede olduğunu söyler misiniz?

• Do you know if the pharmacy is open?

  Eczanenin açık olup olmadığını biliyor musun?

• I wonder where my phone is.

  Telefonumun nerede olduğunu merak ediyorum.
